Captain Richard Sharpe is a fictional British soldier created by author Bernard Cornwell for his historical fiction series of novels. Sharpe first appears in the novel Sharpe's Eagle, published in 1981, which chronicles his rise through the ranks during the Napoleonic Wars.
Sharpe is initially a Sergeant in the 95th Rifles, a distinguished unit known for its green uniforms and marksmanship. He is commissioned as an officer after saving the life of Sir Arthur Wellesley (later the Duke of Wellington).
